09-02-19 CUP BAMPTON 0 v 3 Carterton

Bampton 0 v 3 Carterton

Before the game, if I was offered 3 - 0 I may have taken it. After the game I am disappointed we didn't manage to come away with something more like we deserved. Carterton haven't been beaten all season. They won A league and in semi final of knockout Cup.

But for long periods of the game we were the better team.

We worked hard at training on how we would play against Carterton. They always play the same way and we countered this really well. We know they like to give it short into the corners and look for the long ball up the line. So, when playing against a team who score for fun, we dropped a midfield player and played an extra forward. It worked really well with Carterton struggling to get their normal game going. Playing 2 up front and less in midfield meant we would be susceptible on the break, so we changed our defence and played Charlie centre defence so his pace could stop any counter. We also asked him to play slightly deeper and not worry about off side. I thought we defended from top to bottom brilliantly.

Coming forward we wanted to take the game more to Carterton and play as much as possible in their half, round their box preferably. So we asked the boys to get the ball forward as quickly as possible. Having 2 up front meant we had a chance of getting on it and it not coming straight back at us.

We asked midfield to be brave and take more shots at goal if the chance came. Again, I thought we did this well and gave Carterton as tough a game as they have had all season. We had 5 or 6 chances where ball was either cleared off line or just went wide. On another day, we may have scored more.

I am so proud of how they all played today. They took on board instruction and delivered. We competed physically all over the pitch. I don't think the score reflected the game, they just took their chances better than us. And if someone had said we'd finish the game with 2 in defence and 3 up front, I wouldn't have believed them. I just felt the boys deserved a goal or 2 today as a reward for all their hard work.

I thought our defence was superb today. Thomas had a great game, making some brilliant saves. Jamie, Charlie and Euan were all tenacious and didn't let opposition have a second on the ball round our goal.

Great game, really proud. Now fear no one.

Man of the Match

Really difficult to choose as there was so many great players today but once again I thought James was outstanding. He gives so much effort never stops. He played our game plan beautifully, sitting when need and getting forward to support when the time was right.
